What you should know about hydration
Hydration is important. Meeting hydration goals can be difficult after bariatric surgery. You feel restriction, you can’t eat and drink at the same time and you may dislike the taste of water. Most guidelines recommend having 48-64 oz. of liquids daily after bariatric surgery.
You need hydration to get rid of toxins, for healthy organs and to keep your metabolism up and running. If you don’t meet your hydration goals you can get dehydrated.
Bariatric surgery makes you easily prone to dehydration, because of restriction. Not being able to eat and drink at the same time can make it extra challenging to meet your hydration goals.
Early signs of dehydration are:
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Dry lips
- Dry mouth
- Feeling thirsty
- Dark and strong-smelling urine
- Peeing less than 4 times a day
