Slider Foods

Slider foods are calorie dense, high-carbohydrate foods that offer little to no nutritional value.

It’s important to be aware of slider foods after bariatric surgery, because they can easily cause overeating.

They’re called slider foods, because slider foods become very soft (almost liquid) in your mouth. Slider foods can easily lead to overeating because they take little to no space in your pouch.

Slider foods tend to slide through your pouch with ease – leaving you more hungry than full afterwards.

Trigger foods

Trigger foods are specific foods with a ‘hedonic’ effect – it makes you feel good when consuming them.

They’re triggered by a specific event, environment or emotion.

Trigger foods are usually high-calorie foods or beverages that either contain too much sugar, saturated fat or salt.

Trigger foods are involved in your non-hunger cues. It’s important to pay attention to both slider foods and trigger foods as they may sabotage weight loss and tempt you to fall back into old habits.

How to eat slider foods after bariatric surgery

You can potentially make slider foods more filling by adding a high-protein or a high-fiber source to that slider food. Cheese + crackers will fill up your pouch more than just the crackers by themselves. Always discuss your personal needs with a (bariatric) dietitian.
